September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. Every time, the Core message on suicide prevention is “Talk to someone. Reach out. Don’t give up.”

Sometimes that advice feels too far away when you’re hurting. The missing piece? We don’t talk enough about the real roots that make life feel overwhelming: shame, trauma, and daily stress from systems around us.

  • Shame and Silence

Maybe you’ve felt this: “If I admit I’m struggling, people will think I’m weak.”
That shame keeps so many of us quiet.

The truth: Struggling doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re human.
You deserve help.

  • Trauma That Stays With Us

Past pain—whether from loss, violence, or rejection doesn’t just vanish. Sometimes it sits heavy, shaping how we see ourselves and the world.

Truth: Healing is possible. Talking to someone you trust, joining a support group, or seeing a counselor can help lighten that load.

  • The Stress of Everyday Life

Bills. Job pressure. Family responsibilities. Discrimination.
Sometimes it’s not just about what’s inside us—it’s about the weight of the world outside us.

Suicide Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Talking about wanting to die, or feeling hopeless.
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or usual activities.
  • Big changes in mood—sudden calm after deep sadness, or extreme irritability.
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs.
  • Talking about being a burden, or saying life has no meaning.
  • Giving away personal belongings or saying goodbye unexpectedly.

N/B:  If you notice these signs, don’t ignore them. Reach out, listen with compassion, and encourage them to seek professional assistance .

Healthier Ways to Cope

Here are small things that can make a difference when everything feels too much:

  • Stay connected: Call a friend. Send that text and  DONT  isolate.
  • Ground yourself: Try breathing slowly, journaling, or walking outside.
  • Ask for help early: Therapy or counseling isn’t “too much”—it’s support you deserve.
