Why it Matters this December!

Holidays and celebrations increase travel, alcohol use, and parties — raising the risk of impaired driving.

Impaired driving isn’t limited to alcohol: prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, recreational drugs, fatigue or stress can all reduce coordination, slow reaction times, and impair judgment.

Given this heightened risk during December, its mandatory that you are alert to the causes of  impaired driving.

Practical Health & Safety Tips for the Season

  • Plan ahead don’t wing it

If you intend to drink alcohol or use substances (or anticipate being around people who do), arrange safe transportation in advance: a sober driver, public transport, taxi/ride-share, or a friend who hasn’t consumed anything.

  • Choose a designated driver or alternate ride

Agree beforehand who will stay sober and drive. If it's not you, make sure someone else is committed. Your life — and that of others on the road — may depend on it.

  • Recognize impairment beyond alcohol

Prescribed or over-the-counter medications, recreational drugs, or even exhaustion can impair driving. Always read medication labels, and avoid driving if you feel drowsy, dizzy, or unfocused.

  • Offer or choose non-alcoholic alternatives

If you’re hosting or attending a festive gathering, provide non-alcoholic drinks (water, soda, mocktails) and snacks. This helps reduce the pressure on people to drink and supports safer choices.

  • Encourage open conversations about safety and responsibility

Don’t be afraid to speak up if a friend seems impaired and is considering driving. Encourage alternate transport, or offer a place to stay. Peer support and responsibility are life savers.

  • Wear a seat belt always

Even if you’re not impaired: seat belts remain the most effective protection against serious injury or death in a crash — especially during a season when impaired driving surges.

  • Raise awareness in your community

Use this month to share information (on social media, with friends/family, at gatherings) about the risks of impaired driving, and the importance of planning safe rides and making healthy choices.

N/B:

Sober and safe driving helps prevent injuries and fatalities.

Impaired driving is a major cause of motor-vehicle crashes, injury, disability and death — practicing these safe tips could be the difference between life and death especially during this festive month.
